How Financial Counselor Kathryn Matherly Found her Freedom Working at Freedom First

Kathryn Matherly finds her freedom working as a financial counselor at Freedom First. In her role as a professionally-trained counselor at the Roanoke Financial Empowerment Center, Kathryn provides resources that promote financial literacy, education, and stability to anyone in the Roanoke area at no cost to them.

“Being a part of someone’s journey to reach their financial goal is the best feeling in the world.”

Kathryn says her favorite part of her job as a financial counselor is being able to meet people where they are in life and walk beside them every step of the way to their goal, whether that be debt reduction, homeownership, vehicle purchase, establishing or improving credit, or even just learning more about the American financial system.

Why does she love working at Freedom First? “My team at Freedom First is my family,” she said. “Anytime I have even something personal going on, not necessarily work-related, they’re the first people I reach out to. They’re community. They’re part of me.”

Kathryn is an active member of the Virginia Credit Union League Young Professionals Network, where she and other Freedom First colleagues can enjoy professional development opportunities, and she often seeks opportunities to become more engaged with the community at large.
